Principal, interest, and financing cost
Principal is the amount financed after the purchase price, down payment, trade-in, estimated sales tax, and financed fees are combined. Interest is the additional amount paid for borrowing that principal over the loan term.
A longer term can reduce the monthly payment while increasing total interest. A larger down payment can reduce principal and interest, but it also uses cash that may be needed for repairs, insurance, permits, fuel, or working capital.
Payment cost per mile spreads only the monthly loan payment across estimated monthly miles. It does not include fuel, maintenance, tires, insurance, taxes, downtime, or other operating expenses.
This calculator provides financing math for planning. It is not lending, credit, tax, or legal advice and does not represent a financing offer.
Truck loan formulas and worked example
Taxable price: maximum of purchase price − trade-in value or zero. Sales tax: taxable price × sales-tax percentage.
Amount financed: purchase price − down payment − trade-in + sales tax + financed fees, with negative balances treated as zero.
Monthly payment: the standard amortizing-loan formula using monthly interest and term. At 0% interest, amount financed is divided evenly by the term.
Total interest: total loan payments − amount financed. Payment cost per mile: monthly payment ÷ estimated monthly miles.
Example: a $120,000 truck with $20,000 down, a $10,000 trade-in, 3% sales tax, $2,000 financed fees, 8% annual interest, and a 60-month term has a $110,000 taxable price, $3,300 estimated sales tax, and $95,300 amount financed. The estimated payment is about $1,932 monthly and roughly $0.19 per mile at 10,000 monthly miles.
Before comparing truck financing
- Confirm the tax treatment: trade-in credits and taxable fees vary by jurisdiction and transaction.
- Separate cash price from financed cost: origination fees, documentation charges, warranties, and add-ons can increase principal.
- Check the full term: compare total interest and payoff rules, not only the monthly payment.
- Protect working capital: avoid committing every available dollar to a down payment if the operation lacks repair and downtime reserves.
- Use realistic miles: payment cost per mile rises when utilization falls, even though the monthly payment does not.
Truck payment FAQ
How is a truck loan payment calculated?
An amortizing payment uses the amount financed, monthly interest rate, and number of monthly payments. Each payment includes principal and interest.
How does a trade-in affect the calculation?
This estimate subtracts trade-in value from both the taxable price and financed balance. Actual tax treatment and lien payoff can differ.
What happens when the interest rate is zero?
The calculator divides the financed amount evenly by the entered term and shows zero interest.
What if the down payment is larger than the balance?
The financed amount is floored at zero, so the calculator will not display a negative loan or payment.
Is payment cost per mile the truck's total cost per mile?
No. It includes only the estimated loan payment. Use the Trucking Cost Per Mile Calculator to combine financing with fuel, insurance, maintenance, tires, fees, and other expenses.
